Cape Buffalos in East Africa

African Savanna buffaloes are large, heavy-skinned animals. They vary greatly not only in size but in the shapes of their horns and their colouring. Adults are usually dark grey or black (or even look red or white if they have been wallowing in the mud of that colour) and the young are often reddish-brown. Both males and females have heavy, ridged horns that grow straight out from the head or curve downward and then up. The horns are formidable weapons against predators and are used when jostling for space within the herd; males use the horns in fights for dominance.

Threats of Buffalos in East Africa

Their main predators are carnivorous animals like lions, hyenas and also Nile crocodiles. Humans too hunt them especially once they prove to be a big threat to the people of a particular village and their crops and eat the meat as Bush meat.

Best time to see Buffalos in East Africa

The best time to go on safari to see Buffalos is during the dry season, which is June to October in East Africa. It’s easier to spot Buffalos at this time because they gather at water sources due to the scarcity.

Best Places to See Buffaloes in East Africa

#1-Murchison Falls National Park Uganda

Murchison Falls, where the world’s longest river explodes violently through a narrow cleft in the rift valley escarpment to plunge into a frothing pool 43m below. Wildlife populations have largely recovered from the poaching of the 1980s; in the lush Borassus grassland to the north of the Nile, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and a variety of antelopes are regularly encountered on game drives, while lions are seen with increasing frequency. In the southeast, the Budongo forest is home to chimps and other rainforest creatures.

#2-Masai Mara national reserve Kenya

Masai Mara forms part of the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. But that is not where the game viewing ends; large pride of lions, elephants, Buffalos giraffes, gazelles, and eland to mention but a few, are seen during traditional safari vehicle safaris.

#3-Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania

The crater floor consists of several different habitats that include grassland, swamps, forests, and Lake Makat (Maasai for ‘salt’) – a central soda lake filled by the Munge River.  All these various environments attract wildlife to drink, wallow, graze, hide, or climb.  Although animals are free to move in and out of this contained environment, the rich volcanic soil, lush forests, and spring source lakes on the crater floor (combined with fairly steep crater sides) tend to incline both grazers and predators to remain throughout the year. Buffalo sightings are excellent.
