How to get to Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

Just like one would think of travelling to a tropical rainforest located Northwest of the main capital Kigali, they would have a lot of questions to ask about the road conditions, if you need a 4×4 safari vehicle or you would need to fly into the area, but surprisingly volcanoes national park is located 140 km from the main capital Kigali on a tarmac road, the road trip will take you about 2 hours to Ruhengeri and another half an hour to the park headquarters in Kinigi making it one of the easiest gorilla national parks to access in the whole of Africa.

However, the tarmac road does not cover all the gorilla trekking areas in the park so while planning a safari to the Volcanoes National Park ensure that you use a 4×4 safari vehicle as some terrains are extremely rough and will require a high-ground vehicle.

Accessing Volcanoes National Park from other tourism zones in Rwanda

From Nyungwe Forest National Park

Volcanoes National Park is located about 230 km from Nyungwe Forest National making a 6-hour drive via the Kivu belt road that passes through Gishwati Mukura National Park and the famous Lake Kivu giving travelers great views on the drive.

From Gisenyi Lake Kivu beach area

Volcanoes National Park is located about 100 km from Gisenyi town which is a famous beach town located on Lake Kivu bordering Goma in the DRC which is a famous town to start your Nyiragongo active volcano hike the drive will take you about 2.5 hours as there is a hill-climbing from Gisenyi.

How to get to Volcanoes National Park by Air

If you do not want to drive and you’re not on a safari in any of the destinations you may choose to charter a helicopter from Akagera Aviation to Volcanoes National Park most of the Luxury lodges will have a helicopter landing point at the Lodge which will be just under half an hour hoop to Volcanoes National Park.
