The Saint Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Dar es Salam Tanzania It is a catholic church located in Sokoine Drive, facing the harbour, close to the White Fathers’ House. It was built by the Germans between 1897 and 1902 and consecrated as a Catholic church in 1905. The cathedral is the seat of the Dar es Salaam archdiocese. One of the most notable features of the church is the stained-glass windows behind the altar.
With striking features like the shingled spire, vaulted interior, and stained-glass windows, this Gothic-style Roman Catholic church dominates the harbour front of Dar es Salaam. Built by German missionaries between 1897 and 1902, today this iconic landmark also acts as the seat of the Dar es Salaam archdiocese. Original German inscriptions and artwork still adorn the walls, including the carved relief above the main altar. Sunday is often considered to be the best time to visit the church, as the morning service gives rise to an extraordinary atmosphere.
