The Northern Highland Forest Reserve is a unique forest located in the Ngorongoro conservation Area, this is one of the best places to go for birding while in Ngorongoro a long side of the highlands, crater and the Ndutu area south of Serengeti National Park, the forest is a perfect habitat for flora and birds such as turaco, robin chat, bee-eater, honey guide, warbler, flycatcher, weaver, sunbird, buzzard, cuckoo, hornbill, bulbul, guinea fowl and also home to Endorro waterfalls, Elephant caves while birding in this area you may encounter wildlife like elephant, buffalo, leopard, hyena, duiker, waterbuck, baboon, blue monkey, bushbuck, duiker, bush pig and many more. It is an excellent place for nature walks, hiking, bird-watching, flora identification or research, and game viewing on foot.
Birding in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro crater is one of the best places for birding in Tanzania. The species to look out for are the flamingos, Kori bustards, and crowned cranes. From the crater rims, one can observe species like the African Cytrill sights, forest buzzard, golden-winged sunbirds, white eyes slaty flycatcher, The Golden-winged Sunbird, the Tacazze Sunbird and the Living Livingstone’s Turaco, the Endemic Rufous-tailed weaver and the Jackson’s Widow bird.
Best time to go
Birdlife in the Ngorongoro Crater is good throughout the year, the variety is greatest from November to April when Palearctic and intra-African migratory species are present, and many resident birds are in breeding plumage. The best time to watch wildlife is during the Dry season, which is June to October.
