Golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park-Golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a unique opportunity to observe these playful primates in their natural habitat. The trek typically takes 3-4 hours, depending on the monkeys’ movements, and includes a one-hour viewing period with the habituated group. The park also offers a longer “Golden Monkey Habituation Experience” where visitors can spend four hours with a research group, gaining a deeper understanding of the monkeys’ behavior and the research efforts.
Actual Golden Monkey Trekking:
The trek begins early with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a guided hike through the bamboo forests in search of the monkeys. The activity takes about 4 hours per session during which you are allowed the opportunity to view, take photos of the primates before heading back to your lodge or camp. The route you take to find the monkeys may be akin to that which they tread looking for young bamboo branches; a hike through the bamboo forest. Remember to carry your Camera to freeze your golden monkey adventure memories, binoculars for spontaneous birding, appropriate hiking gear like waterproof hiking boots, gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, and a rain poncho and you will be good to go.

The dry season (June-October and December-February) is considered the best time for golden monkey trekking, as it offers less rainfall and easier trekking conditions.
Habituation Golden Monkey Group.
Mgahinga hosts one group fully habituated for daily trekking, and another group undergoing a research and habituation process.

Standard trekking includes a one-hour observation period after finding the monkeys, while the habituation experience lasts four hours.
Golden Monkey Permits:
Permits are required and can be purchased through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or tour operators. A golden monkey trekking permit costs approximately USD 100 for foreign non-residents and residents, and UGX 150,000 for East African citizens.
