How difficult is Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorillas generally move in a radius of 1 km daily but this can change due to the fact that their movements are usually determined by other factors like interaction with other wild animals, wild mountain gorillas, and desire for food and water.

Time of the year is also a determining factor, during the rainy season gorilla trekking can be slightly difficult due to the fact that the hiking trails are slippery and it makes hiking difficult.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda usually takes between 2-6 , there are over 10 mountain gorilla families in volcanoes national park and each gorilla family has a home range and territory, this territories change depending on the time of the year, special team of rangers called the trackers will start as early as 7 am in the morning to start trekking the gorillas using fresh nests, broken shrub, and sounds of trees breaking, as soon as each trackers locates the family a report will be send to the lead guide who will take clients to see the gorillas, if the trackers find the gorillas quicker then you will have easy trek but if the trackers find them after sometime then you will have medium or long trek, the most difficult part of this is that mountain gorillas are wild animals, they are not collard nor tagged and they move freely in the rain forest, they move on 4 limps meaning they can change location within the shortest time possible so it’s very important to prepare for long trek and hope for a short trek if you are not sure of your trekking ability.

Mountain gorillas move around in very dense jungles at areas of high altitude. That said, generally speaking, anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can do a mountain gorilla trek. The toughest aspects of the trek will be the tricky terrain and high humidity levels.
