What is the recommended Age for Mountain Gorilla Trekking?
Gorillas are the largest of the great apes. An adult male can weigh over 180 kilos (400 pounds). When mature, males develop a silver-grey saddle, hence the name ‘silverback’. Adult females weigh about 90 kilos (200 pounds).
Mountain gorillas live in forests high in the mountains, at elevations of 8,000 to 13,000 feet.
The lifespan of mountain gorillas is 50-60 years. They breed slowly, with females giving birth on average once every four to six years and only three or four over their entire lifetime. Mothers take great care of their young, and the silverback male defends his troop fiercely against any outside threats.
Recommended Age for Gorilla Trekking
Generally, the age limit for Mountain Gorilla Trekking in East Africa is 15 years and any child below the age of 15 may be prohibited from visiting gorillas in their natural habitat as it is for Bwindi and Mgahinga National Park.
However, we still advise that all travellers should ensure that they have a certain level of fitness as these mountain gorillas are wild and they can move anytime and anywhere depending on the conditions in that specific habitat.
