Wildebeest migration safari in April

In April, the herds begin to journey north toward the central and western sectors of the Serengeti national park and the Grumeti River. Many camps close this month for maintenance, as April also marks the beginning of the long rains in East Africa. With the migration on the move, it can be a good time to stay in central Serengeti.

What to expect in April

Seronera is one of many world-famous attractions in the Central Serengeti. Seronera Valley supports a much greater diversity of resident wildlife than anywhere else in the Serengeti including elephant, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, hippo, Topi, reedbuck, buffalo and baboon. This resident prey in turn attracts the highest concentrations of large predators in Africa (lion, hyena, leopard and cheetah) and a multitude of smaller predators (mongoose, jackal, serval and bat-eared fox).

Most safari game drives concentrate along the Seronera River and with excellent reason: lion sightings are common and the riverbank is home to one of the world’s densest population of leopards. The sausage trees and umbrella thorns rank among the best places in Africa to search for leopards – there are too few tall trees for these elusive creatures to be well-hidden. Several lion prides in the area have also taken to the trees regularly in recent years, particularly during the rains. A very special sight!
