Wildebeest migration safari in October
Wildebeest migration safari in October
In October, the migration can still be found in the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti as herds continue to graze in large numbers with lions and other predators always in the vicinity. River crossings can still be seen on occasion. As the short rains begin to brew toward the end of October, the first of the herds begin to journey back south along the eastern edge of the Serengeti and Loliondo following new grasses.
The Loliondo Game Controlled area is also a key area for the Great Serengeti – Mara ecosystem as a wildlife corridor and a dispersal area for migratory wildebeest and other wildlife species. It is also a feeding and calving ground for wildebeest and a major water catchment area for the Serengeti National Park.
What to expect in October wildebeest migration
October, the main chaos has ended and the migrating columns have gradually moved eastward. However, they wildebeest will face the heavy waters of the Mara River once more as they prepare to cross once again for their return journey southward. In fall, the Migration starts to work its way south into Tanzania, so there will be plenty of wildlife spotting in popular safari destinations like Kenya’s southern Maasai Mara and in northern Tanzania.
Where to stay in October for wildebeest migration
Northern Serengeti! Lamai and Kogatende are the place to be if you are hoping to catch the crossings and the migration herds in general. It is important to remember that when the wildebeest are crossing the Mara River in between Kogatende and Lamai in the Serengeti, they are only sometimes also crossing the Mara River on the Kenyan side! So combining both northern Serengeti and Masai mara can be a great decision in October
We recommend staying at the following
- Nomad Lamai Serengeti
- Alex walker’s serian
- Kimondo camp
