The most elusive of the Big Five members, leopards can be tricky to spot. With incredibly effective camouflage and a preference for hunting at night, leopards are usually the most difficult safari animals to see in the wild.

The leopard is one of the five extant species in the genus Panthera. It has a pale yellowish to dark golden fur with dark spots grouped in rosettes. Powerful and beautiful, the iconic leopard is one of the most glamorous wild animals.

Threats of Leopards in East Africa

The major threats to leopards throughout East Africa are habitat conversion and intense persecution when conflict occurs with people across their range. A rapidly increasing threat to leopards is the poisoning of carcasses targeting carnivores, either as a means of predator control or incidentally. Skins and canines are also still widely traded domestically for traditional cultural rituals.

Leopard sightings occur throughout the year in East Africa but the best time is during the months of December to February and then June to October which is relatively drier than March to May and November.

#1-Samburu and Masai Mara National reserve Kenya

Samburu’s standing kopjes and rocky outcrops provide the perfect habitat for the leopards in the morning and evening as they look out for pray and Masai Mara is definitely one of the best big cat spots in Africa. Leopards are found throughout the national reserve and also in the adjacent private conservancies such as Olare Motorogi, Mara North and Naboisho which all boast good leopard sightings.

#2-Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Park

The main areas in Murchison Falls for spectacular predator viewing are the Delta and Buligi Peninsula where there are great chances of seeing the leopards in the morning and afternoon as they wait for prey that go to drink water and in Queen Elizabeth the Kasenyi plains with its abundant cactus trees provide the perfect camouflage for the leopards and there is a good chance to see one on the cactus trees during your game viewing in the park.

#3-Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania

Leopards in Serengeti national park are recorded to be over 1000 individuals living in the savannah plains of the park, these leopards are clearly seen throughout the savannah plains of the park but commonly seen in Seronera and Lobo Valley and there is a large population of Leopards on the Southern and Eastern slopes of the Ngorongoro crater. The Southern and Eastern slopes the covered by a natural forest called Northern Highland Forest Reserve.
