Rhino Trekking in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Rhino Trekking in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary-Covering over 70 square kilometers of rolling landscape and native woodlands, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located 4 hours away from Kampala along to route to Murchison Falls, Ziwa was formerly a cattle ranch but in the early 2000’s the government of Uganda together with a non-government organization (Rhino Fund Uganda) decided to reintroduce the white Rhinos that once exist in Murchison Falls before they were whipped away by the civil wars that hit the country in 1970’s.
The Experience.
Standing next to the huge white rhinos in their natural Habitat is an unforgettable experience. Visitors are always thrilled when they trek on foot to observe these amazing creatures up close. Many describe it as one of the most emotional and unforgettable experiences.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you will find wild rhinoceros’ roaming freely in their natural environment, so it’s one of the top places to visit as your pre or post safari experience in order to compete the Famous African “big five” wildlife on a safari in Uganda.
What to expect on a Rhino trek on foot.
The sanctuary is a home to over 40 white rhinos, it’s important to note that Rhinos don’t live together due to the territorial behavior and you may not see so many rhinos at one sighting.
Since the sanctuary is 70 sq. Kms it may not be possible to walk from the office to where the rhinos are sighted on that particular day and most days you take a short drive closure to the Rhinos and then start your walk with the ranger after safety briefing.
You will spend 30-45 minutes with the Rhinos as you observe them in their natural habitat feeding, playing and sometimes wallowing in the mud.
When is the best time to see white Rhinos in Ziwa?
Rhinos are highly very sensitive to hot sun so the best time of the day to trek the Rhinos is in the Morning and Late evening, in terms of the best time of the year to visit the sanctuary to see the Rhinos is during the dry season which runs from June to September and from December to February when most of the Rhinos tent to concentrate in the water holes and the swamps in the sanctuary making it easy to spot and also its easier to trek in dry season opposed to rainy season which runs from March to May and October and November.
