Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in Uganda where White Rhinos are being bred following the extinction of Rhinos during the political insurgency that hit Uganda from 1960 to the 1980’s making the wildlife population drop dramatically white Rhinos form part of the Big 5 African wildlife alongside Elephants, Lions, Buffalo and Leopard.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a 70 sq km area located in Nakasongola district halfway between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park other wildlife includes Kob, Bushbucks, Crocodiles, Reedbucks and the rear Leopard. The sanctuary is also a birders’ paradise with over 100 species recorded including the iconic shoebill stork

Rhino tracking on foot

Rhino tracking in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can be done any time of the day starting from 8 am to 4 pm and ranger guides will always be ready to take you to see them on foot

Night walks

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers night walks to look out for nocturnal wildlife like the leopard, mongoose and bird species like the Night Jar

Shoebill Canoe boat cruise

The Lugogo swamp is a perfect spot to look out for water birds and the shoebill that has been sighted there several times by the guides

Best time to trek the Rhinos in Ziwa Rhino sanctuary

Rhino tracking is an all-year activity however the rainy seasons from March to May and from October to November can cause massive flooding making tracking a little difficult.

Practically Rhinos are active during cooler hours of the day and the best time to experience Rhino tracking in Ziwa is in the Morning and the evening respectively.

How to get to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located about 180 km from the main capital Kampala and 125 km to Murchison Falls Park headquarters in Paraa and clients are advised to use 4×4 vehicles to access the Rhino Sanctuary as the sanctuary can be slippery if it rains.
