Things to do in Cape Town

Table Mountain:

Get ready for breathtaking views as you hike up Table Mountain. There are several hiking trails you can choose from all with varying difficulties or you can take a cable car up and down if you prefer not to hike. The mountain is easily accessible from the city Centre and there’s a shop and restaurant where you can pick up souvenirs and grab a bite to eat. Also nestled at the foot of the mountain is Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, where you can find a rich range of flora and fauna.

Bo-Kaap:

This neighborhood is characterized by the beautifully bright buildings that line the street. Originally painted in bold colors by Muslims to celebrate Eid, the tradition has remained in one of the oldest areas of Cape Town and makes for gorgeous photo opportunities.

Go wine tasting:

South Africa is known for its incredible wines so a wine tasting tour is a must. Whether it’s a day spent vineyard-hopping or a relaxed afternoon wine tasting surrounded by beautiful scenic mountains and lush greenery, there are several to choose from. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are popular options, both less than an hour drive from the city Centre.

Robben Island:

This tour should be at the top of your list when visiting Cape Town. The former prison now turned museum is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site and gives you more of an insight into South Africa’s colonial past. Access to Robben Island is via a ferry that leaves from the V&A Waterfront and it can only be visited by booking an official tour.

Boulder’s Beach:

Get up close and personal with penguins at one of Cape Town’s most visited beaches. You can admire them from boardwalks suspended along the beach or book a guided tour if you don’t fancy battling the crowds for a glimpse at these adorable waddling crowd-pleasers.

The V&A Waterfront is an ideal base for exploring Cape Town and offers a variety of accommodation types from luxury hotels to self-catering apartments. Restaurants, bars and shopping are all within walking distance, allowing guests easy access to entertainment. The views of the city and Table Mountain from this area are stunning.

Several tourist attractions are found at the Waterfront including the Two Oceans Aquarium, the Cape Wheel and several museums including the incredible Zeitz Contemporary Museum of Art. It is also the departure point for ferries to famed Robben Island.

A Cape Town holiday is best during peak summer from December to February. These hot summer months also coincide with local school holidays, so book your accommodation early if you want to visit over Christmas or New Year. Late April to early June has crisp and clear days, perfect for a hiking trip.
