Mountain gorillas are one of the most endangered species of great ape in East and Central Africa. They are a subspecies of eastern gorillas largely found in west African lowland forests, and as their name implies, they live in the high mountainous habitat at very high elevations of 8,500 to 14,000ft above sea level.
Mountain gorillas are incredibly social primates, generally living in family groups led by one dominant silverback male. They play an important role in the ecosystem because of their diet; they are predominantly plant-based and large-scale vegetation grazers.
Trekking the endangered mountain gorillas remains one of the most undisputed highlights of any travel to East Africa, sitting in silence beside these incredible primates deep in the rainforest can only be described as an emotionally overwhelming experience in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Looking deep into the expressive brown eyes of gentle giants is surely the most exciting and poignant wildlife encounter that Africa has to offer.
Where to see Mountain Gorillas in Africa
Mountain gorillas exist in two isolated populations: the Virunga Massif of extinct volcanic mountains on the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda, and in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.
Habituated Mountain Gorillas
Many people would wonder how safe would it be to enter the thick rainforest to trek for such a giant looking Ape and the answer is that the gorillas will trek in Africa are habituated Gorillas, which are used by human beings after 3 years of close monitoring before they are made available for Visitors.
Gorilla permits
Unlike other wildlife like Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Rhinos and Buffalos that can be seen throughout Africa, Mountain gorillas are only found in three countries two being in East Africa and the third in West Africa at the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley, this will require travellers to book their gorilla passes away in advance to guarantee trekking and a minimum of 6 months to 1year is required.
Age limit for Gorilla trekking in Uganda
Due to the strenuous nature of the Activity a minimum age of 15 is required to be able to acquire a gorilla permit, those below that may not be able to secure a gorilla permit.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, covering 321 sq km is one of the largest areas in East Africa which still has an Afro-montane lowland rain forest extending well within the montane forest belt. Located on the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift Valley south southwestern Uganda. the park is a biodiversity hotspot with possibly the greatest number of tree species for its altitude in East Africa. It is also host to a rich fauna including many endemic butterflies and one of the richest mammalian assemblages in Africa. Home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the clouds, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m. As its name suggests, it was created to protect the rare mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense forests, and it is also an important habitat for the endangered Golden Monkeys. As well as being important for wildlife, the park also has a huge cultural significance, in particular for the indigenous Batwa pygmies. This tribe of hunter-gatherers was the forest’s “first people”, and their ancient knowledge of its secrets remains unrivalled.
