Best places to stay in Serengeti to see the Great Wildebeest Migration

The great migration usually takes place in the area of about 40, 000 square kilometers pretty much defined by the dominant migration routes of the white-bearded wildebeest in what is regarded o as the Masai Mara and Serengeti ecosystem which is divided by the Mara River so being at the right time at the right place is all that it takes to witness the River crossing as the Wildebeest do not have defined crossing points, the crossing points change time to time depending on the obstacles faced as the wildebeest trek from southern Serengeti through the western corridor crossing Lakes and Rivers on their way to the greatest obstacle of the entire migration the Mara River which usually floods and also with huge crocodiles that wait for the Migrating herds during the migration so while planning your Masai mara wildebeest you have to choose the best places to stay in order to have higher chances to see the River crossing.

Our favorite lodges and Camps

  • Olakira migration camp

Between June and October, Olakira is in the north to witness the crossing of the Mara River. Here, watch thousands of wildebeest take a leap of faith into the water, facing hungry Nile crocodiles and cantankerous hippos. When the herds are on the move, the air is full of grunting, thudding hooves and billowing dust.

From December until March, we move camp to the southern plains of the Serengeti, where the wildebeest go to give birth and graze on lush grass, and predators such as lions and cheetahs gather to prey on the young.

  • Legendary expedition’s Songa tented camp

permanent camp in Kogatende in the northern region of the Serengeti, Songa consists of eight ensuite tents and a family tent. Its vibrant decor creatively reflects the joy and wonder of being on safari, taking inspiration from the seemingly endless inky blue skies and burnt orange sunsets of the wilderness. Set up as a split camp, there is also the option to book one side of Songa on an exclusive basis.

  • Sanctuary kichakani Serengeti camp

The northern location showcases an incredible view of wildebeest crossing the Mara River during the great migration from June to November, while the southern location enjoys a prime position for witnessing wildebeest calves, every December to March. Aside from the migration, spectacular predator and prey action is expected from both locations, thanks to an abundance of wildlife, from zebras, wildebeest and gazelles to lions, hyenas, cheetahs and leopards.

  • AndBeyond Serengeti under canvas

Moving five times a year the camps attempt to anticipate the movements of the Great Migration, bringing guests as close as possible to the wildebeest action, as well as exploring magnificent resident game. With just nine tents nestled at each private campsite, enjoy the luxury of complete contentment and nights spent in the African bush.

  • Asilia’s Ubuntu migration Camp

Ubuntu Migration Camp follows the colossal herds of wildebeest as they journey around the Serengeti. From the dramatic river crossings in the north to the fertile grasslands in the south where the wildebeest give birth, we set up camp nearby to ensure you’re always close to the action.

Open: Mid-November to mid-March (southern Serengeti), mid-June to October (northern Serengeti)

Month to month guide to Wildebeest Migration in East Africa

The Serengeti wildebeest migration is an annual mass movement of ungulates between Serengeti and Masai mara and this is a continuous event that involves crossing the Mara River which is the greatest obstacle during the Migration and this is largely triggered by the need for water and green pasture and our guide will give you an insider of where the wildebeest are more likely to be during each month.

Wildebeest Migration event

Serengeti National Park, in northern Tanzania, is known for its massive annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Seeking new pasture, the herds move north from their breeding grounds in the grassy southern plains. Many cross the marshy western corridor’s crocodile-infested Grumeti River. Others veer northeast to the Lobo Hills, home to black eagles. Black rhinos inhabit the granite outcrops of the Moru Kopjes. The park offers wide range of activities that travellers can experience while in the national park

Inspirational Journeys

The vast plains of the Serengeti comprise 1.5 million ha of savannah. The annual migration to permanent water holes of vast herds of herbivores (wildebeest, gazelles and zebras), followed by their predators, is one of the most impressive natural events in the world.
